"Montana has some of the most pristine fly fishing rivers in North America and you can share the best of the best with Jay Dixon Adventures."
Depending on several factors, fly fishing trips will be on the Bitterroot River, Blackfoot River, Clark Fork River, the Missouri River or Rock Creek.
With the large, jagged granite mountains of the Bitterroot Range in the back drop, this river offers incredible views along with some of the best dry fly fishing in the World. We start fishing this river (with dry flies) in March, and fish it almost all year thru October.. It is a large fluvial basin that holds many springs, channels and log jams. The upper stretches are almost entirely different in fisheries and character than the lower river. We catch a lot of our trophy browns on this river throughout the year. From basic pocket and riffle fishing on the upper, to site casting a monster trout in a spring on the lower river, this river has beautiful scenery and spectacular fly fishing.
The Blackfoot River, famous from Norman Macleans A River Runs Through It, is one of the prettiest rivers we float on. We have canyons, rapids, and boulders that offer exciting fishing all year. Some of the most exhilarating trips we offer are during high flows, when there are class 3 and 4 rapids we float while we fish! This is the season for the large browns that lurk in the river. Most of our fishing during the year is for native Cutthroat trout in crystal clear water with riffles, pockets, and deep green pools. If you want to be “haunted by waters,” The Big Blackfoot is a great river to explore with our guides.
The Clark Fork is a large freestone river that all of our rivers in Western Montana drain into. It is one of the largest river systems in the Columbia River Basin, and the largest river in Montana, by volume, There are over 300 miles of the Clark Fork, and we float on many of them. With this much water, there is a wide variety of sections to choose from that have their own personality. Besides the runoff in June, we fish this river all season. There are great hatches that provide awesome dry fly fishing, and we usually average 16” rainbow trout, and land a trophy on almost every trip. The size of this river can be intimidating to most, but our guides are experienced on over 150 miles of this river!
Known as the land of giants, this tail water fishery has some of the best trophy trout fishing in the world. The Missouri River is located in central Montana. Although some of the fishing on this river can be technical, there can also be fantastic dry fly fishing with large fly patterns. This river holds over 5000 trout per mile in the upper reaches, and the hatches can be thick. We float this river all year, and can be a nice option during our runoff, and drought seasons. We have some special trips in this region in late May and early June, when there are some exceptional opportunities to have some of the best fishing of the season with very few people around. Jay is one of the few outfitters in Western Montana that specializes in hunting large browns on “The Mo.” The best way to describe the Missouri is to use a quote from a client and experienced fly fisherman, “Floating the Missouri with Dixon Adventures is a life changing experience.”
This is one of Montana’s many Blue Ribbon Trout Streams that has incredible fishing and views. We offer trips in the non permitted areas outside the Lolo National Forest. We can float the upper stretches in June and wade fish after June. There is a healthy population of Cutthroat and Browns that average about 15 inches. Some of the world’s most spectacular scenery. We often float more than 20 miles in one day! This is an incredible float trip, that can only be done during a short period of time. The summer can provide excellent wade fishing trips on Upper Rock Creek for native Cutthroat Trout.
